Vṛtti and kleśa are two major principles from the Yoga Sūtra, a major yoga text that focuses on stilling the busy mind. Our mind is our worst enemy and it can become our best friend! This is done by recognizing the premises of the vṛtti, which says the mind will fluctuate and the kleśa which are the obstacles of awareness about how our mind fluctuates.
We are not our mind. The teachings on the vṛtti tells us the mind has different ways of “doing its job”The mind may be guided by right knowledge, wrong knowledge, or live in a state of dreaming, be drowsy, or dependent on memory. How do we know? And, then what happens when we get blocked from awareness. The kleśa are our guide here:misunderstanding our true nature, ego, attachment, aversion and clinging.
In this introduction to the vṛtti and the kleśa, we will discuss the concepts and bring awareness to the idea that the mind has a whole kindergarten of thoughts flowing around. Some are based in the various movements of the mind, other times we may find we have a block allowing us to see our own truth. If we can begin to be aware and identify who is in charge, then the Self can begin to take over control of your life and support you in living your life with grace.
