Studies have shown that yoga can enhance the ability for children to develop their physical body, their mental and sensory integration, and social relationship skills.  Yoga does this by playfully, teaching awareness, concentration, patience, focus, and imagination with mindful techniques. The process of growing through life cycles impacts children’s health issues and their response to dis-ease.

Childhood diseases, including weight, ADHD, diabetes, asthma, coughs, colds, and the results of growing experiences of falls, sports, etc, may be addressed in yoga therapy through the basics. A child’s age, life cycle, maturity, as well as the dis-ease, may impact how you work with the child.  In this Yoga Therapy for Children workshop, we will explore the uniqueness of children’s growth cycles, childhood diseases and guidelines for yoga therapy. We will work with attention span, appropriate language, adaptations, and developing a practice for a juvenile using yoga therapy as a support for their wellbeing.  For those wanting to work seriously with children, expanded trainings would be advantageous and possibly necessary.  Students are required to submit a presentation exhibiting the application of tools learned.

Children go through a natural mental health maturation and a spiral of growth.  Most books are written for basic children education, or children with mental health issues.

A general book about Children and Ayurveda is:
Douillard, Dr. John, Perfect Health for Kids. 2004, North Atlantic Books, Berkeley, CA.

When it comes the therapeutic issues, children health issues compounded due to their maturity.  There is not a good book on children’s health issues.  A good resource book for mental health is:
Fury, Michelle,  Using Yoga Therapy to Promote Mental Health in Children and Adolescents, 2015, Handspring Publishing Ltd, United Kingdom.

We will be reviewing tools. A background on basic tools will be necessary.
